Marketing and consent
The checkout marketing opt-in, how consent is recorded, and the one-way Mailchimp sync — with the consented-only default and the legal responsibilities.
Your customer book is purchase history, not a mailing list. Turning customers into an audience you may market to has its own switch, its own consent record, and its own rules — all gathered here.
The checkout opt-in
Under Settings → Checkout (with the checkout appearance), the Marketing opt-in at checkout toggle adds a consent checkbox to the buyer flow. When a buyer ticks it, their consent — the boolean and the exact version of the consent text they agreed to — is recorded on the order and the customer. That pinned text version is your evidence of what they agreed to, so it's never edited in place; a new wording is a new version.
With the opt-in on, your customer book gains a genuine, consented marketing segment. With it off, the checkbox simply doesn't appear.
Syncing to Mailchimp
Connect Mailchimp under Settings → Integrations (API key, audience pick) for a one-way sync of customers into your audience, with two modes:
- Customers with marketing consent (the default, and the safe one) — only people who opted in are synced.
- All customers ("at your own risk") — everyone, which you may only lawfully do on your own basis for commercial communications. The UI warns you; the responsibility is yours.
Sync now drains the backlog on demand; otherwise it runs on its own cadence. The sync never resurrects someone who unsubscribed on Mailchimp's side — an ESP opt-out is always honored, in both directions.
You are the data controller for marketing emails to your buyers; Bookitive (and your Mailchimp account) act as processors. Send commercial communications only to people who gave you a lawful basis — the consented-only default exists precisely so the easy path is the compliant one. Choosing "all customers" is a deliberate legal decision you make, not a default.
Where this leaves the buyer
- A buyer who opts in is in your consented segment and your synced Mailchimp audience.
- A buyer who doesn't opt in still gets transactional emails (their tickets, payment instructions) — consent governs marketing, never the mail required to fulfill their order.
